What are SANDACH?
SANDACH is an acronym that stands for Animal By-Products, which are not intended for human consumption.
SANDACH waste is waste from the production of foodstuffs of animal origin. This type of waste may include animal carcasses, parts of animals, products of animal origin, or by-products that come from animals not intended for human consumption.
SANDACH CATEGORÍAS
SANDACH waste is classified into three categories based on the risks posed.
Category 1 SANDACH
Category 1 SANDACH are primarily waste containing animal carcasses or body parts suspected of being infected by disease, animals killed in the context of disease eradication measures, animals used for experiments, along with products derived from animals treated with prohibited substances.
Category 2 SANDACH
Category 2 SANDACH are by-products collected from waste water from establishments or plants, such as sludge, by-products containing residues of authorised substances and contaminants exceeding the permitted levels and products of animal origin declared unfit.
Category 3 SANDACH
Category 3 SANDACHs are low risk and include carcasses or body parts of animals slaughtered which are fit for human consumption, but are not intended for this purpose, and which show no signs of infectious disease, such as blood, heads of poultry, hides and skins, bones, feathers, etc.
Food Products and By-Products of animal origin not intended for human consumption for commercial reasons, manufacturing or packaging defects or other defects which do not pose a health risk.
SANDACH REGULATIONS
The applicable legal framework governing animal by-products not intended for human consumption at community level is Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009.
In the case of Spain, Royal-Decree 1528/2012 laid down the conditions governing the implementation of this regulation.
